Euro-Canadian cis-gendered, middle-class, 59-year-old woman, predominantly heterosexual. Raised in a middle-class secular Christian family in rural Alberta on occupied Plains Cree and Blackfoot territory.

Tea drinker who loves to kayak, run, hike, cycle, snowshoe and generally play outdoors. After over three decades in Vancouver and a year in Malawi, she now resides in a semi-rural home on unceded Qualicum First Nation territory.

Raised in the middle class and passionate about personal growth.

Maddy is a certified Mental Fitness Coach through Positive Intelligence. She also co-leads youth workshops in mental fitness and healthy conflict. Maddy chairs the PQ for Schools Community of Practice, and is a founding member of PQ Safeguarding Committee

Lu Ripley

Lu has been working in the field of education and health promotion for over 40 years, including several years in the Downtown Eastside Vancouver as an education and prevention lead in addiction services with Vancouver Coastal Health.

She holds degrees from York University and the University of British Columbia. Since 2011, Lu has worked as Director of Community Learning and Engagement at the Crisis Centre of BC. She is also a LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills coach and safeTALK trainer.

Ethics in Coaching: Should we talk about Suicide?

As coaches, we recognize the boundary between coaching and mental health care – but how do we navigate the space between them? We are well trained in supporting our clients to explore their experiences more deeply, but few of us may know how to recognize or respond to a client having thoughts of suicide. What would be most ethical? Is referral to another profession the best response?
