Lost in Translation: How Coaches Can Navigate Language and Cultural Differences Ethically
In today’s increasingly international coaching environment, many coaches work across languages, cultures, and communication styles, yet misunderstandings still arise even when people “speak the same language.” This interactive workshop explores how cultural patterns, communication styles, expectations, and unspoken assumptions influence coaching relationships and impact trust, clarity, and the depth of conversations. Grounded in the principles of the International Coaching Federation Code of Ethics and intercultural communication studies, the session will help participants recognize the difference between language barriers and meaning barriers and develop practical strategies for ethical and effective communication in multicultural contexts. Through reflection, discussion, and practical application, participants will explore tools to support clarity and stronger coaching outcomes in multicultural settings.
• coaches working with international or non-native English-speaking clients
• coaches participating in multicultural coaching communities
• coaches who want to deepen their awareness of how communication impacts coaching outcomes
Participants will:
• recognize the difference between language barriers and meaning barriers
• identify key cultural patterns that influence coaching communication
• develop strategies to ensure client understanding without oversimplifying the coaching process
• learn how to navigate differences in communication style
• explore practical tools to support clarity, alignment, and ethical communication in sessions
The workshop will combine reflection, discussion, and practical application, allowing participants to connect insights directly to their own coaching practice.
