Leadership: Is It Really What You Think It Is?

What if everything you’ve been told about leadership is wrong?

In this provocative session, Jim Benvie, “The History PM”, challenges long‑standing leadership myths and reveals what history actually teaches us about influence. Using vivid case studies, including the contrasting leadership of Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee, Jim shows that effective leadership has far less to do with charisma or personality and far more to do with timing, preparation, and follower psychology.

Rather than adding another “leadership style” to the growing list, this session cuts through the noise. Jim explores why leadership theories keep multiplying without clarity, how the Halo Effect distorts our judgment, and why many “natural leaders” fail when circumstances shift. Through stories spanning ancient civilizations to modern executives, he demonstrates that leadership is shaped by context, readiness, and the ability to act when the moment arrives.
