Ending a session well: ICF Competency 8 – Facilitates Client Growth
Every coaching conversation needs a strong start. The ICF competency for that, Establishing and Maintaining Agreements, gets plenty of attention. But the conversation’s other bookend matters just as much, and gets far less airtime: how we help the client end well.
Here’s anuncomfortable truth: insight is cheap. Clients have breakthroughs in sessions all the time. What’s rare — and what actually determines whether coaching creates lasting change — is what happens after the client leaves the coaching bubble and steps back into everyday life. Research on learning transfer is blunt: without deliberate support to bridge insight into action, most of what people learn in a session never shows up in their behaviour. Our work together isn’t sustainable unless we also help the client prepare to carry it out the door.
In this 1-hour, highly interactive session, we'll make the case for ending well, unpack what Competency 8 really asks of us, and practice it together in breakout groups.
What you will walk away with:
- Practical questions you can use in your very next session to close well
- A clearer picture of what separates insight from lasting client change
- Hands-on practice applying Competency 8 in breakout groups
