Western Carolinas Monthly Program: Coaching Supervision
Coaching supervision–a well-established practice in Europe and Australia–has been gaining popularity in the United States.
ICF defines coaching supervision as “a collaborative learning practice to continually build the capacity of the coach through reflective dialogue for the benefit of both coaches and clients.” While ICF does not currently require its credentialed coaches to receive supervision, ICF’s European counterpart (the EMCC) does; ICF does both encourage supervision and allow for up to 10 continuing education credits per renewal cycle to be earned through participation in coaching supervision.
Coaches choose to engage in supervision–either one-on-one or in groups–for reasons such as navigating challenging client situations, receiving support, and benefiting from alternative perspectives about their clients, themselves, and the systems in which they work.
