Business Planning: How to Create Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) as Coach Entrepreneurs
Our journeys as entrepreneurs begin and evolve in many forms. Often, the visionary call to coach comes first, before the “how will we make it real” business plan. We might stay busy with long to-do lists, yet struggle to know if our activities drive true progress so we can do the work we love in a viable way. As independent business owners, how might we set goals, prioritize activities, and measure meaningful progress in the face of doubt, distraction, and isolation? Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) developed at Intel in the 1970s and are used frequently by corporations to increase focus, accelerate progress, and align efforts. Coach Barbara Visser experimented with OKRs as a method for practical inspiration and self-accountability as she launched her solo coaching business during the 2020 pandemic. She discovered that using OKRs for her small business provided structure, motivation, and momentum to stay focused even when she got discouraged, distracted, or blocked.
More information about the presenter: Barbara served on the leadership team of the ICF Washington State Chapter for three years, as Vice President, President, and Past President (2021-2023), where she led a team of 13 volunteer directors serving an organization of 850+ coach members to support systemic transformation for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is also an Objectives and Key Results (OKR) expert and a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). One of her proudest accomplishments is becoming a certified birth doula as a side-gig early in her career, and she brings that by-your-side approach into her coaching presence.
